ALEXEY POPOV / russian PAINTER
Alexei Nikolaevich Popov (1858-1917) - Russian battle painter, colonel of artillery, class artist of the 1st degree in battle painting.
Pupil of the 2nd Moscow Military Gymnasium. He graduated from the Pavlovsk military school, was promoted to lieutenant (1878). He was assigned to the St. Petersburg Fortress Artillery (at the end of 1880), which gave him the opportunity to attend classes of the Imperial Academy of Arts in his spare time.
From 1882 to 1886 he annually receives awards from the Academy of Arts: a small silver medal (1882), a large silver medal (1883), a small silver medal (1884), a small silver medal (1885), a small gold medal (1886) for the painting “Episode from the Battle of Ostroleka in 1831” and a large gold medal of the Academy (1887) for the implementation of the program “Attack by the Lubensky hussars of the Circassians near the village of Khaidarskaya in the campaign of 1877”. The title of a class artist of the 1st degree (1887) with the right to foreign pensioners.
